Pharaoh Ants

In all premises where food his handled there is the possibility of food poisoning bacteria being spread from dirty areas and raw foods on to prepared foods or the ants becoming unwanted foreign bodies within the food. Computers or other delicate electronic equipment can be severely damaged when ants crawl inside. Fortunately these ants do not bite or sting people but their presence in vast numbers on clothing and furniture is a great nuisance. Colonies spread to new sites by small groups of workers carrying some brood away from the nest. A temporary resting place such as a pile of laundry or cardboard box may be transported to another building and thus start up a new infestation.

Control
This pest is still rare in Harrow, there have been a small number of cases reported in the recent past. It is exceedingly difficult to eliminate completely a deep seated infestation using ordinary insecticides. It is essential to get sufficient poisons into the actual colony to destroy the queens and brood, not just kill a few of the workers on their travels. It is also vital that all of the colonies in the block are dealt with at the same time or the problem will recur within a few months. Treatment by insecticidal sprays alone will lead to new colonies being set up and the infestation will spread and become harder to treat.

Effective treatment is by placing bait points containing a delayed action stomach poison mixed with a food which is attractive to the ants in and around the property. The workers will take the food back to the nest, where it will eventually kill the whole nest. Therefore, for the treatment to work it is necessary to put up with the ants for a few weeks during treatment and not to try killing any of them, as this will lead to satellite colonies being produced. Spray treatment can be carried out to mop up any workers, once the nest is destroyed.

Originally found in the tropics, these ants were first recorded in Britain in 1828. They require warmth to flourish and so nests are usually found in crevices near to central heating boilers, hot water tanks, ovens etc. Hospitals and bakeries are the most common premises affected.

Life Cycle

Worker ants travel along defined trails collecting savoury foods and water to take back to the nest. There it is used to feed the egg laying queens and the young immature stages or brood. Each nest can contain up to 400 queens, 50,000 workers and 100,000 young stages. There are often several different nests or colonies in the infested premises.

Health Risks
Infestations cause far greater problems than those associated with the more common black or red garden ants. In hospitals there is the risk of ants crawling into packets of sterile bandages and contaminating them with germs.
